![]() ![]() The sound of the AI’s voice seemed to emanate from within him, rather than his helmet speakers. He looked at the new Spartan for a moment longer, then addressed Cortana. The two women nodded, checked their plasma pistols, and began to move toward the sound of the fighting. “We need to move,” The Chief said, looking between Linda and the new Spartan. The Covenant borders were starting to overwhelm the Autumn’s marine and crew complements, in spite of their best efforts to repel them. “They must’ve slipped past the marines,” she murmured, “which means more will be on the way soon.” The sounds of fighting had grown louder since they’d entered the bridge. Linda, meanwhile, was regarding the corpses. “Until you find some ammo for the magnum,” she said. The latter picked up the major’s plasma pistol and offered it to the Chief. The whole ordeal lasted less than ten seconds, and now both Linda and the new Spartan were armed. The other two let out cries of shock but the new Spartan silenced the second minor’s cry with a twist of its neck while Linda used her fallen Grunt’s plasma pistol to kill the major. There was a wet splatter as her fist shattered the Grunt’s skull, sending a spray of fluorescent blue blood across the corridor’s wall. Linda was the first to react, lunging forward and bringing her gauntleted fist into the nearest Grunt’s face. ![]() Two of the three were yellow-clad minors, whereas the third’s red armor indicated that it was a major. The color of the tanks, coupled with the minimal armor they wore, was a means to denote rank – not that a Grunt’s rank held much sway within the Covenant’s forces. Instead they breathed methane, contained in a pyramid-shaped tank they carried on their backs. Unlike most of the Covenant’s forces, Grunts couldn’t breathe oxygen. They were short, stout creatures with arms that seemed almost too big for their bodies. The first thing the three Spartans encountered after leaving the Autumn’s bridge was a trio of Covenant Grunts clustered at the entrance, arguing over who should enter first in high-pitched, nasally voices.
