"It's just a vision, a plan for the future," says Pocono Township Supervisor Pat Ross. Those issues include sprawling subdivisions, fast-growing commercial strips, billboards that dot the landscape in increasing numbers, zoning laws, roads that become more antiquated with each passing day, and economic development. That vision is a comprehensive plan, completed last summer and designed to guide Monroe's municipalities as they face all the problems associated with being the second-fastest-growing county in Pennsylvania. Ironically, Open Space is a part of the Monroe 2020 concept.īut Open Space's success to date can be credited to the promise of that $25 million carrot, which is dangling before municipal leaders salivating over the prospect of adding new parks and recreation areas.įor Monroe 2020, those same leaders have had to buy into a less tangible product. With the county ready to spend $25 million over the next 10 years, municipal leaders want to get their share of the Open Space pie.Ĭomparison, those same municipalities have taken a more cautious approach to Monroe 2020, the county's comprehensive $1 million effort to plan for all facets of its future growth. In the year and a half since Monroe County voters said yes to Open Space, all 20 of the county's municipalities have eagerly signed on to the concept.
